  5. The full retail version of PageMaker 5.0 is available in both the Macintosh and native Power Macintosh versions. The Tryout is available only in a Macintosh version.

  7. 1.0  INSTALLING THE TRYOUT VERSION

  9. 1.1  Making sure hard drive space is available
  10.  
  11. To install the Tryout Version, you will need approximately 2MB more space available on your hard drive than the PageMaker Installer/Utility informs you during installation.

  13. 1.2  Installing the LaserWriter 8.0 printer driver
  14.  
  15. The LaserWriter 8.0 printer driver is installed on your hard drive when you install the PageMaker 5.0 Tryout Version. You must select this driver in the Chooser in order to print publications from the Tryout Version to a PostScript printer.

  17. 1.3  Setting up a PostScript Print
  18.  
  19. Before you can print publications created with the PageMaker 5.0 Tryout Version on a PostScript printer, you must set up your printer using the new LaserWriter 8.0 printer driver installed with the Tryout Version. Using this printer driver lets you take advantage of the many PostScript printing enhancements in PageMaker 5.0. (You may receive unexpected results when printing with an earlier version of the LaserWriter printer driver.)

  21. To set up your PostScript printer:

  23. 1. Choose the Chooser from the Apple menu.
  24.  
  25. 2. Select the LaserWriter 8.0 icon on the left side of the window.

  27. 3. Select a PostScript printer from the list of printers that appears.
  28.  
  29. 4. Click "Setup...."
  30.  
  31. 5. Click "Auto Setup."

  33. The LaserWriter 8.0 printer driver locates the PostScript Printer Description (PPD) file for your printer type. If the correct PPD file is not found on your hard drive, the "Generic" PPD file is chosen instead.

  35. 6. Click "OK" to save changes to your printer setup.

  37. An icon appears next to your printer in the Chooser, indicating that the printer has been configured with the LaserWriter 8.0 printer driver.

  39. You are now ready to print publications using the PageMaker 5.0 Tryout Version.

  41. 2.0  VERSION 4.0 PPD FILES AND OTHER ALDUS PRODUCTS

The version 4.0 PPD files installed with the PageMaker 5.0 Tryout Version are not compatible with earlier versions of other Adobe products (which use version 3.0 PPD files). The PageMaker Installer/Utility installs them in a separate folder on your hard drive, so the PPD files used by other Adobe products remain intact.

  45. 3.0  COMPATABILITY WITH RETAIL VERSION OF PAGEMAKER 5.0

With the PageMaker 5.0 Tryout Version, you can create and print sample publications using many of the features found in the retail version of PageMaker 5.0. However, you will be unable to open or print any publications created with the Tryout Version in the PageMaker 5.0 retail product, and vice versa.
